Jury's Announcement of the Second European Prize of Sacred Architecture |
The Judging Commission for the dissertation projects and for the final Masters' exam presented to the Second edition of the European Prize of Sacred Architecture - Foundation Frate Sole, year 2007, after examining the projects of the 70 participants, proclaimed winner of the Prize the project for a parish complex in Villasmundo (SR), dissertation of Sebastiano Adragna and Alessandro Mauro, discussed by the Faculty of Architecture of Siracusa by Università degli Studi of Catania (supervisors Profs. Bruno Messina and Vittorio Fiore).
The Jury decided to assign the second prize to two projects, proclaimed second equal, both discussed by the Faculty of Architecture of the Università Roma Tre (supervisor Prof. Luigi Franciosini). The first one is a project for a new church in Cusco in Peru, done by Irene Marchesi; the second one is a project for the parish complex entitled to S. Carlo Borromeo in Roma - Tor Pagnotta, done by Gabriel Narino.
The prize for the winner is 4000, 00 (four thousand) €; both the runner-ups are assigned a prize of 2000, 00 (two thousand) €. |
Moreover, the Jury recognized noteworthy the following projects: the project of the Master's final exam for a parish complex in Roma-Magliana done by Germana Dolce (Master for churches design by the Faculty of Architecture Valle Giulia of the University Sapienza in Rome); the project for the church of Sant'Apollinare in Trento done by Roberto Paoli (Master for architecture design of the buildings for the cult by the Faculty of Engineering of the Università di Trento); the projects of the dissertation of Gerald Schnell for an ecclesiastical centre in Frankfort (Technische Universität Darmstadt, supervisor Prof. G. Pfeifer) and the one for a parish complex by Gianluca Rimoldi and Davide Sala (Faculty of Architecture of Politecnico In Milan, supervisor Prof. Massimo Fortis). The Judging Commission positively judges the clarity of the architectural structures and the ability of enhancing the environments through the quality of the light, which makes the chosen projects stand out, but, on the other hand, recognizes a widespread lack of the right expression of the liturgical environment and of convincing relations among its components. Nearly all of the projects propose again a longitudinal lay-out of the assembly without any particular important solution for the lay-out of the liturgical poles and for the orientation of the ecclesiastical hall. The lay-out of the internal environments is therefore quite rigid and cannot help a positive relation among the different steps of the liturgical action, the architectural components and the path/standing dynamics within the hall. The winning project has been appreciated for the clear articulation of the shapes and the interesting development in section, and for the consistency with the parish context, highlighted by the interesting solution of the subject of the "door", a big austere wall which symbolically shows the Christian nature of the building and reveals the internal room, extending the opportunity of its using in the parvis. The liturgical hall has an essential shape with an interesting design of the vertical planes which portray a clear assembly set. Both the second equals' projects show a lyric tension in proportioning the architectural volumes to the environment - the natural one in Cusco's project and the metropolitan suburban in the one proposed for Rome. In the first one, through an unusual comparison with the sourness of the territory and the pre-Columbian footprints, an interesting system of rich relations between the plan and the section has been developed. This is highlighted by an attention to the architectural detail and to the coherence among space, natural lighting and artistic intervention; while the closed but furrowed with light composition of the second project stands out as a significant emergency within the urban crossroads by looking for an original perceptive relation among the different architectural structures of the complex, given both by volumetric and visual continuity and contrasts between vacuums and full loads, highlighted by the clear pathways' articulations.
The proposed recommendations aim to strengthen the contribution of the Masters' projects (newness of the current edition of the Prize) whose subjects are the design of churches and the identification of specific lines of research for the design of the liturgical ground. In particular, projects using the so called "a due fuochi" liturgical lay-out are reported and the ability of the participants to divide new "containers" for pastoral and cult activities according to typology is highlighted. To conclude, the Commission wish to positively highlight the wide participation and the interest rose by the Prize assigned by the Foundation Frate Sole under the particular coincidence of Father Costantino Ruggeri's death, the founder of the Foundation to whom the love and the thought of the jury and of whoever has a heart for the beauty in the art for the liturgy are addressed.
