I volti della crocifissione

The faces of the crucifixion

the faces of the crucifixion

On the occasion of the centenary of the birth of Father Costantino Ruggeri (1925-2025),

the city of Pavia - the spiritual, artistic and intellectual home chosen by the Franciscan friar since 1959 - pays tribute to the singular master with the exhibition "Art and Theology. The faces of the crucifixion'.hosted by the 20 September to 23 November 2025 in Pavia Cathedral.

The exhibition intends to remember Ruggeri as an artist and theologian, capable of combining aesthetic research with the depth of spiritual thought. For him, in fact, making art meant making theologyEach work was a meditation on man's origin and destiny, on the relationship between time and eternity, in an endless search for what gives meaning to life.

At the centre of the exhibition are four works dedicated to the theme of the Crucifixion, entitled 'White form. Mystical space'. (nos. 1, 2 and 3) and "Christ drunk with love". They constitute a visual meditation on the Gospel account of Luke (23:39-43): from the drama of Christ's last breath to the question of the meaning of his death, to the transfiguration of the Cross that opens up to the announcement of the Resurrection.

Art, for Father Constantine, thus becomes privileged language to talk about Godand transcend the limits of concept and word. The images, without claiming to encapsulate the ineffable, soar towards the divine and allow a glimpse of its presence, offering a gaze capable of uniting respect, depth and beauty.

New Skies and New Earth Exhibition

New skies and a new earth

Exhibition in homage to Father Costantino Ruggeri

📅 28 June 2025 - 6 p.m.
📍 Sacro Monte of Orta San Giulio

On the occasion of the anniversary of the Canticle of the Creatures by Saint Francis of Assisi and the centenary of the birth of Father Costantino Ruggeri, the exhibition 'New Heavens and New Earth' celebrates the figure of one of the most internationally recognised Franciscan artists for his pictorial, sculptural and architectural works and for his extraordinary lead-blown antique glass windows.

Set up on the two floors of the New Chapel of the Canticle of the Creatures at the Sacro Monte of Orta San Giulio, the exhibition presents itself as a true narrative journey that interweaves Father Costantino's artistic vision with the spiritual and natural context of the place. The works engage in a profound dialogue with universal values and the Franciscan heritage, inviting each visitor to reflect on his or her own identity, relationships, shared knowledge and the very meaning of existence.

A courageous project of research and contemplation, which guides us - through art - to rediscover the essence of beauty and spirituality. The life and work of Father Costantino Ruggeri represent a gift, a path of light that ideally accompanies that of Saint Francis, in a perfect joy that still knows how to speak to the human heart.

The inauguration will take place in the presence of the authorities and will be followed by a convivial moment.

In conjunction with the opening, the exhibition's webpage will be active, accessible from the official website of the Frate Sole Foundation.

Double presence at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition.

The Frate Sole Foundation is participating in the 19th International Architecture Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia, scheduled from Saturday 10 May to Sunday 23 November 2025,

with a twofold testimony of their commitment to promoting a culture of contemporary sacred architecture, attentive to spirituality, beauty and the environment.

ITALY PAVILION

Visions from the Sea - The Intelligence of Water. Within the project "Terræ Aquæ.

Italy and the intelligence of the sea', the photographic works of Father Costantino Ruggeri, Franciscan artist and spiritual founder of the Frate Sole Foundation, will be exhibited.

This is a collection of photographs taken in 1984 on the shores of the Ligurian Sea, in which Father Costantino, with his faithful Hasselblad camera, captured the beauty in objects carried by the sea and shaped by time.

These phototypes offer unprecedented perspectives and profound reflections on the relationship between places and forms. The images inspire the creation of spaces that feed on visions rich in enchantment, contributing to a reflection on the poetic and spiritual value of matter and water.

The Fondazione Frate Sole proposed this project with the intention of offering visitors a unique visual and poetic experience.

BRAZIL PAVILION

The Brazil Pavilion also sees the presence, albeit indirect, of the Foundation: it hosts the project (RE)INVENTION, curated by the Plano Coletivo collective, consisting of Luciana Saboia, Matheus Seco and Eder Alencar, co-founder of the ARQBR Arquitetos studio in Brasilia.

It was precisely the ARQBR studio that was awarded the Second International Prize for Sacred Architecture in 2024, promoted by the Frate Sole Foundation: an award that today finds ideal continuity in Alencar's participation as co-curator of the Pavilion.

A significant connection, testifying to the international impact of the Prize and the value of an architectural vision attentive to the dialogue between spirituality, environment and culture.
